Flood Control and Regulation of Rivers

Flood control and regulation of rivers are a series of measures, works, water management facilities and structures by means of which:

Damage from floods and other unfavorable consequences caused by watercourses is reduced in a planned way;
Conditions for rational utilization of watercourses for navigation, water supply, hydraulic engineering, hydro-reclamation, recreation and other needs are provided,
The environment is protected and improved.

Experiences point to the fact that damages caused by floods and disorganization of watercourses are reduced in the most rational manner when a projected solution relies on different, mutually compatible investment operations (active and passive systems and facilities), as well as on specific measures not related to investments.

In order to provide planned functions of the system for protection from floods and arrangement of watercourses, it is necessary to systematically monitor conditions and effects of realized structures, works and measures in the systems, in order to quantify the needs for rational ongoing maintenance and perform potential rehabilitation, additional building or system reconstruction in a timely manner.

The planned functionality of water management facilities and systems and a degree of area protection against harmful effect of waters is achieved by realization of maintenance program. Structures to be protected against floods are the following: sediments, regulation buildings, retentions, dams, accumulations, drainage ditches, drainage wells, water gates and pumping stations.
 

Annual maintenance program includes:

regular maintenance of structures for protection from floods;
dam and regional water system through investments;
regular maintenance of drainage facilities and maintenance of water regimes, i.e. functioning of drainage systems.

On the area of PWMC "Srbijavode" the following has been constructed:
1,894 km of sediments (WMC "Sava-Dunav" 850 km, WMC "Morava" 1044 km);
34 accumulations,
about 576 km of regulated watercourses (WMC "Sava-Dunav" 300 km) and
a large number of regulation facilities – bank establishments (WMC "Sava-Dunav" 50 km), etc.

(Note: these data also includes facilities on the territory of AP Kosovo and Metohia, but these facilities are not included in maintenance programs, due to the impossibility of access to the facilities and impossibility of carrying out works)

The listed structures protect around 600,000 ha of land under cities, settlements, industrial buildings and various infrastructure.
